Wayne Novick will no longer be "Truckin' on the soccer sidelines.
Novick, who ushered the West Carrollton High School girls soccer team to a state runner-up finish in 1989 and national prominence, has stepped down as head coach after 17 seasons and an estimated 156 wins.
Novick earned a reputation as one of the area's most colorful coaches and frequently coached in a tye-dyed shirt and a ponytail. He is an avid fan of the rock group Grateful Dead. His teams won four Greater Miami Valley Conference titles and were ranked No. 6 nationally in 1992
"The passion is not quite there anymore," Novick said from his attorney's office in Miami Twp. "I had it for a long time and I passed that love of soccer to the next generation. Many of those girls are still playing in the local amateur leagues. That means my job is complete. We had a great run on the pitch and I'll never forget that glorious afternoon in 1989 at Trotwood-Madison when we played Northmont for the state championship (4-1 Thunderbolts win) in front of a packed crowd of 4,500. The game was delayed because of the traffic jam on Union Road. You don't see those crowds anymore for girls soccer."
