In front of 19,052 spectators at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night, former UD soccer star Chris Rolfe made his first start for the Chicago Fire of the MLS and took full advantage of the situation. |
With Chicago trailing D.C. United, 1-0, early in the second half, Rolfe scored the first goal of his MLS career, and it held up as the teams played to a 1-1 tie. Rolfe, a Kettering Fairmont grad, received a cross from teammate Mario Ivan Guerrero and placed a shot just out of the keeper's reach.
Rolfe, who had two of Chicago's three shots on goal, nearly scored another goal in the fourth minute of the game, but the D.C. goalkeeper made a great save on his low line drive.
"This kid has clear ideas," Chicago head coach Dave Sarachan said. "He's got a great idea of where to go with the ball and a great first touch. When he's in front of the goal, he generally gets a good shot off."
Chicago is scheduled to play the Crew in Columbus at 7:30 p.m. April 30.
