There should be some earth-moving equipment unloaded near Northmont's football stadium in the next couple of weeks to tear up the football field. The Northmont Board of Education has given a tentative OK to replace the grass, which wears out every fall, with a synthetic surface similar to FieldTurf that many high schools are using.
A combined booster group of football, soccer and band parents has been working to raise the estimated 400,000 for the project through private donations. No school funds will be used.
The blessing was given provided the group meet three criteria by Friday: They must show all the funds have been raised; they must have a signed contract from the school-board approved company doing the installation; and they must have a long-term plan in place to maintain and replace the surface.
"If we get the OK and the weather cooperates, the whole project should take eight weeks," said Robin Spilllers, Northmont director of athletics.
