There will be no new turf on the football field at Northmont Stadium this fall. A combined booster group of football, soccer and band parents running the project was not able to come up with the estimated 400,000 of private money to fund the project and meet the deadline of last Friday that was mandated by the Northmont Board of Education to have everything in place.
"Some of the initial sources for the funding didn't materialize as expected," said Northmont superintendent of schools Gale Mabry. "The group tried very hard to find alternates, but couldn't hit the deadline.
"We had to be very strict with the deadline because we only have an eight-week window this summer to get it done without any weather or labor-related delays. So everything had to be in place and ready or it is a no-go."
The booster group will begin a new fund-raising campaign June, called Mark Your Turf. Deeds of 12-by-12-inch pieces of the new surface will be sold for 99 each.
Fairmont is the only area school to have the new turf, which is currently being installed at the Roush Stadium/Foreman Field complex. Several schools have taken looked at similar projects, but put them on hold until school levies are passed.
