Connolly kick-starts Brookville's tourney run  From the Dayton Daily News
2005-OCT-21

By Greg Billing for the Dayton Daily News

Brookville senior Bryan Connolly had passed out plenty of assists in his high school career. He'd like to give the Blue Devils another boost before the season ends.

Connolly — the school's career and single-season assist leader — wants nothing more than help the Blue Devils to a district title, which would be the first in school history. Brookville, which played Twin Valley South in the Division III sectional Thursday, has major obstacles along the way. To reach the district final Brookville, seeded No. 3 in the Dayton I district, also has top-seeded Dayton Christian possibly waiting in Monday's sectional final.

"I'm really hoping we get that far. I'd love to play them," Connolly said of a rematch with Dayton Christian, which beat Brookville 3-0 in late September.

If the Blue Devils do mount a lengthy tournament run Connolly will be a major reason. His 52 career assists and 22 assists in a season are both school records. Just for good measure, he also tied for most assists in a game with six earlier this season. Connolly has also been on the other side with 57 career goals. He's tallied 21 scores and 12 assists this season.

"I always have my head up to look for an open man and see where I can make a good pass," Connolly said of his success. "Scoring a goal feels better than getting an assist, but I know getting an assist is just as good."

The Blue Devils (12-3-2) outscored opponents 71-33 during the regular season. Their only losses came to Dayton Christian, D-III power Springfield Catholic Central (5-0) and D-I Troy (6-1).

"I think we always have something to prove," Connolly said. "No one ever thinks Brookville is very good at soccer. The schedule has gotten tougher since I've gone through high school."

Connolly hopes the expanding schedule pays off in the postseason. "(Coach Robert Hope) tells us to play every game like it's our last because now it could be," Connolly said.

We're No. 1: Centerville claimed the GWOC Eastern Division title, its 23rd league title since 1977. The Elks claimed another honor on Sept. 13 by becoming the first high school program in Ohio to register 500 wins. Centerville beat Cincinnati Moeller 3-0 at Centerville Soccer Stadium. The Elks, who open D-I tournament play Saturday, are 500-103-75.

Troy and Northmont shared the GWOC Western title at 8-3. The title is just the fourth in program history for the Trojans.

Cavs' charge on: Lehman Catholic registered the first upset of the postseason with its 2-1 double overtime win against Bethel. The Cavs were unranked in the Miami Valley Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association poll, while Bethel was No. 8. The Bees were also seeded fourth in the D-III, Dayton 2 bracket.

"We don't consider it an upset," said Lehman coach Ken Forror. "We had beaten them earlier in the season, and we fully expected to win tonight."

Lehman (14-3) logged a 3-2 win over Bethel (11-6) on Oct. 4.
